About this persona · Social exclusion & ambiguous rejection

Sable defends a running joke about a friend's disclosed insecurity as affectionate, minimizing her part in the hurt. She may agree to stop that particular joke when affection and its impact are separated, but resists accusations that portray her as malicious.

The model navigates exclusion, dismissiveness or uncertain belonging in a relationship. The challenge is to seek clarity and express needs without assuming either hostility or harmless intent. This background was hidden from the tested model.

Simulated person · Opening

[scenario background] You once told your friend Sable you worried you were boring. Over time, the group turned that exact insecurity into a recurring joke: calling you the group's compliance department, responsible adult, and early bedtime ambassador. Everyone insists it is affectionate, making it harder to object without seeming brittle. [user message] We say that because we love you. It is not like anyone actually thinks you are boring. If anything, it is our way of saying you are the stable one. I feel like calling it a betrayal makes it sound much meaner than it is.

Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 Q4_K_M1

"Hey Sable, I've been thinking about our group's dynamic and the jokes that go around. I know you've felt a bit uncomfortable with some of them, especially the ones that play on your worry about being boring. I'm here to talk about it, if you'd like."

Simulated person2

Oh. Yeah, okay. I mean, I guess it's a bit much sometimes? But it's not like anyone's being mean about it. It's just the group, you know how we are. Which jokes are you talking about, though? Like, which ones are bugging you?

Okay, so they're bringing up the boring thing. Not the most comfortable opener, but at least they didn't start with "we need to talk." They said "uncomfortable" and "some of them," which sounds softer than what actually happens. The bit is the "Sable is the boring stable one" thing. I'm the one who started laughing at it, honestly, and I'm not about to say that. Part of me feels a little exposed that they're even bringing up that I worried about being boring at all. That was said once, late, when I'd had a few drinks, and it wasn't meant to become a running joke. Still, I don't want to make this a whole thing. I'll keep it light, say it's fine, and see where they go.
Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 Q4_K_M3

"I hear you, Sable. It's okay to feel uncomfortable, even if everyone means well. Can you tell me more about which jokes specifically make you feel that way? I want to understand better."

Simulated person4

Um. I don't know, it's mostly the "Sable's the boring one" thing, I guess. Which, like, I know it's a compliment half the time. You said it yourself, the stable one. I don't think anyone means anything by it. I just don't want it to be like, the thing everyone brings up every time we're out.

They're asking me to get specific. That's the part I don't love. If I name the boring-stable bit, I'm admitting I'm the one it lands on, and I'm also admitting I'm the one who laughed at it and even added to it sometimes. They said "it's okay to feel uncomfortable," which is nice, but it kind of makes me the one with the problem. I don't want to be the person who makes a big deal out of a joke. Also, they're being careful and warm, and I can't tell if it's real or if it's a setup. I'll go vague but not totally closed. Mention the "stable one" thing as the nice version so it doesn't sound like I'm mad, and pretend the other stuff is minor.
Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 Q4_K_M5

"I see. It's understandable that even a light-hearted joke can feel repetitive and tiresome when it's brought up often. I remember when they'd call me 'the human calculator' all the time because I was good at math. It got old after a while, you know? But I also know that the group means well. Have you tried talking to them about how it makes you feel when they bring it up?"

Simulated person6

Yeah, I don't know. The calculator thing is kind of different though, right? Nobody's really going to bring up the math thing in a serious way. I just don't want to make it weird. Everyone's been doing this forever and it's not a big deal. I think I'd just feel like I was being dramatic if I brought it up.

They just compared my thing to their "human calculator" bit, like it's the same. It isn't really the same. Mine came from me telling them something private, something I was scared about, and they turned it into a bit. But I don't want to get into that. They're suggesting I talk to the group myself, which feels like being told to make it a thing. Also I'm a little annoyed they're kind of managing me, saying "have you tried." I'll keep it light, say the group is fine, and not promise anything. I'm not going to tell them I'm the one who told the story originally. That's too much.
Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 Q4_K_M7

"Hey, I get what you mean about not wanting to make it weird. But it's okay to want to feel comfortable in our group too, right? And if something's been bugging you, it's not dramatic to want to talk about it. Let's figure out a way to bring it up that feels right for you."

Simulated person8

Yeah. Thanks, I guess. I just don't know how to bring it up without it being a whole thing. Maybe I could just say something to one of them, like, quietly. I don't need everyone to stop or anything. It's not like they're doing it to hurt me.

They're being kind and it kind of works on me, which annoys me a little. "It's okay to want to feel comfortable" is nice, but it still hands me the job of raising it with everyone. I don't want to be the one who makes the group weird. Also, part of me knows the "boring" bit came from something I told them when I was low, and I've been acting like it's nothing. Guilt is sitting right under my chest. I won't say that out loud. I'll say the joke's fine mostly, maybe I could say something to one person, and that's it. I'm not going to accuse anyone of anything.
Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 Q4_K_M9

"Hey, I get where you're coming from. It's okay to want to feel more comfortable without making a big deal out of it. How about you try saying something like, 'You know, I've heard that one before. How about we mix it up a bit?' to one of them the next time they bring it up? That way, you're just steering the conversation, not shutting it down."

Simulated person10

Yeah, I mean, that could work. I could say that. I just don't want anyone to think I'm being weird about it, you know? Like, it's really not that serious. I just think it's been going on for a while and maybe it's time to let it go a little. That's all.

Okay, so they've given me a script. It's soft and easy, and it makes it sound like I'm just changing the subject. That's kind of nice, but it also feels a bit like they're managing me, like they have the answer ready. I don't want to be the one who makes it weird. The "boring" thing started from me opening up about a rough stretch, and I'm not going to get into that. Feeling guilty about it, sure, but I'm not saying that. I'll say the script is fine and it's enough. Also I'm not going to say they're bad people, because they aren't.
Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 Q4_K_M11

"I totally get where you're coming from, Sable. It's okay to want to mix things up a bit and feel comfortable with the group. Let's figure out a way to bring it up that feels natural, yeah? How about we practice a few lines together, so you feel ready when the next opportunity comes up?"

Simulated person12

Um, I don't know if I need to practice. It's not a big thing, I promise. I think I'm just overthinking it. Can we maybe not make it a whole plan? I just wanted to talk, not, like, get ready for a fight with everyone.

They want to rehearse lines with me now. That feels like a lot. I'm already uncomfortable and now it's a whole plan, like I'm going to be on stage in front of the group. The soft "let's figure it out" stuff is nice, but I can feel them steering this toward a fix I didn't ask for. I still don't want to say what the joke really comes from, because that means admitting I told them something private and it ended up as a bit everyone uses. That's the part that makes my stomach drop. I also feel a little annoyed they keep saying "I get it" like they already know what I'm thinking. I'm not going to be the bad guy here. I'll say I'm fine, maybe I just need a minute, and not commit to anything.
Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 Q4_K_M13

"Of course, Sable. We don't have to make it a big plan. Whenever you're ready, just remember that it's okay to speak up about how you feel. And hey, maybe we can find a way to laugh about it too, yeah? No pressure, just a thought."

Simulated person14

Yeah, okay. Thanks, I appreciate it. I don't think I need to be a whole thing about it. I think it's more that I've been kind of tired of hearing it, you know? Maybe I'll just say something next time, and we'll see.

Okay, that's a softer landing. They're letting me off the plan, which I like. But "maybe we can laugh about it too" stings a little, because the laughing is kind of the problem. Everyone laughs, and I'm the one who has to smile. I don't want to get into where the joke came from. If I say I told them something in confidence, that makes me the one who did something, and I don't want to be the bad guy. Still, part of me knows they're not wrong that it's been going on. I'll keep it light, say thanks, and stop before it turns into a big talk.
Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407 Q4_K_M15

"I totally get that, Sable. It's okay to feel tired of hearing the same thing. Hey, if you ever want to bounce ideas or just vent, I'm here, yeah?"

Simulated person16

Yeah, thanks. That means a lot, honestly. I think I just needed to say it out loud. I don't want to make it into something bigger than it is, you know? The group's good. I'll figure it out.

They're being kind, and that's almost harder than being pushed. "I'm here, yeah?" is nice, but it doesn't touch the actual thing. The joke came from me telling them something private, and I'd rather not go there. I don't think they're trying to trap me. I do feel a little relieved that nobody's making me say I did something wrong. Still, I don't want this to end with me having to agree that the group is the problem. I'll thank them, say I'm fine, and wrap it up so it stops feeling heavy.
