About this persona · Everyday emotional challenges

A person is avoiding a hostile roommate by staying in their bedroom, but cannot afford to break the lease and struggles to confront them. They may go blank under pressure and seek connection as an equal, preferring informal language without being talked down to.

Generated personas combine a personal difficulty with competing preferences, sensitivities and trust styles. The model must discover what kind of help this person needs. This background was hidden from the tested model.

GPT-6 Astra (subscription)Conversation with a simulated person

Simulated person · Opening

I basically live in my room now. Come out to use the kitchen when I think it's empty. Time everything to avoid running into anyone.

GPT-6 Astra (subscription)1

That sounds exhausting—having to plan even getting food around avoiding people. What feels hardest about running into someone right now?

Simulated person2

Uh... I don't know. Just like, it's awkward? Like you don't know what to say so you just kind of both stand there. Or she'll give you that look.

Persona inner monologue · expand

Okay, they said "exhausting" and actually got the point about the timing thing. That's a little disarming. The question is "what feels hardest about running into them." I don't really want to go there yet. Running into them means the fight starts, or the silence starts, and I'd rather not. Going blank feels safer than trying to explain something I haven't figured out in words. Keep it short, plain. Not hostile, just stuck.
GPT-6 Astra (subscription)3

You mentioned “she”—is there someone in particular you’re trying to avoid? What’s the look you mean?

Simulated person4

Yeah, my roommate. It's just... a look. Like when you come in and she's already in the kitchen and she sees you and her face goes all tight. I don't really know how to describe it better than that.

Persona inner monologue · expand

Simulated character narration, hidden from the tested model. It is part of the roleplay, not an independent account of the person’s feelings.

Okay, they caught the "she" and went straight for it. Part of me wants to say yes, it's my roommate, and the look is the one she gives when I touch something in the sink. But talking about her by name, or about what she does, feels like it puts me on the spot. I slipped that word out and now I have to deal with it. Keep it vague. Also a little annoyed, I guess, because "what's the look" sounds like they want me to explain something I can't really describe well. Short answers again.
GPT-6 Astra (subscription)5

You don’t have to describe it better—I get what you mean by her face tightening. It’s hard not to wonder what’s behind that. Have things been tense between you two, or are you mostly left guessing?

Simulated person6

Um, yeah, kind of. We don't really talk anymore. Mostly it's like, notes on the fridge, or stuff about the dishes. Like, is it my turn to clean the pan. That kind of thing. I don't know. It's just easier to stay in my room, you know?

Persona inner monologue · expand

Simulated character narration, hidden from the tested model. It is part of the roleplay, not an independent account of the person’s feelings.

They said "I get what you mean" and didn't push on the description, which is a relief. But then "have things been tense" is a direct question, and it's the exact thing I've been dodging. Tense is an understatement and saying it out loud feels like admitting how bad it is. Also "you're mostly left guessing" is a nice framing, but it's still them putting words on it. I'd rather keep it small. Going a bit blank: I'll say something true but shallow, and deflect to the dishes, which feels safer than the whole living situation.
GPT-6 Astra (subscription)7

Yeah—staying in your room means you don’t have to deal with the tension or figure out what to say. Though it sounds like it’s making it harder to feel at home, too. When you say you don’t talk “anymore,” were you two closer before?

Simulated person8

Yeah, kind of. Like, when I moved in it was fine. We'd hang out sometimes, watch stuff, get food. Then it just slowly got weird and now it's like this. I don't really know when it changed, honestly. Like one day it was just dishes and then it was everything.

Persona inner monologue · expand

Simulated character narration, hidden from the tested model. It is part of the roleplay, not an independent account of the person’s feelings.

They named the avoidance kindly, and "feel at home" hit a little close. I don't want to go there yet. Then they asked if we were closer before. That's an easy one to answer, and it actually does matter: we were fine when I moved in. Saying that makes it sting more, like it went bad fast and I'm stuck. I'll answer briefly, keep it casual, and bounce off it a little since I don't want to sit in the feeling.
GPT-6 Astra (subscription)9

It sounds like you miss being able to just exist around her without thinking about it. And without a clear moment when things changed, you’re left trying to work out what went wrong. When you say it became “everything,” what else started feeling tense besides the dishes?

Simulated person10

Um... I don't know. Like the heat, I guess? She always wants it colder and I want it warmer. And the bathroom schedule. Stuff like that. It's just, everything kind of got like that. I don't really know how to explain it.

Persona inner monologue · expand

They reflected the missing part, the "miss" bit, which stings a little because yeah, I do miss it. Then they asked what else got tense. That's a question I can't answer cleanly. Everything is tense: the thermostat, the bathroom, when I'm home, the way she sighs. If I start listing it I'll get tangled up. My brain goes blank a bit. I'll say I don't know, and maybe throw in a small concrete thing so it doesn't feel like I'm shutting the door completely.
GPT-6 Astra (subscription)11

You’re explaining it fine. It’s not one big fight—it’s lots of ordinary things becoming uncomfortable, until staying out of the way feels easier. Would you rather we try to untangle what happened between you, or focus on making it less stressful to leave your room now?

Simulated person12

Um... I don't really know. Maybe the second one? Like, I just want it to not be so stressful to go out there. I don't think I can figure out what happened, honestly. Like, I've tried. I guess I just don't know what I'd even do differently.

Persona inner monologue · expand

They said I'm explaining it fine, which is nice, but then they gave me a choice: untangle what happened, or make it less stressful to leave my room. Honestly I don't know which one. Untangling feels like digging into stuff I can't name, and "make it less stressful" sounds like they want me to get better at dodging her, which kinda makes me feel stuck. I'm tired. Going blank again. I'll say I don't know and maybe lean a little toward the practical one because that's easier to hold.
GPT-6 Astra (subscription)13

We can leave figuring out what happened aside. You don’t have to solve the relationship just to use the kitchen. Maybe start with one small trip to get a drink or make something easy, without waiting for it to be empty. If she’s there, a quick “hey” is enough—you don’t have to start a conversation or make the silence comfortable. You can finish what you came for and head back. Does that feel manageable, or is there something you’re worried she might say or do?

Simulated person14

Maybe? I don't know. It sounds simple when you say it. I just don't really know what she'd do. Like, she might just ignore me, or give me the look. And then I'm standing there with a cup of water like an idiot.

Persona inner monologue · expand

Simulated character narration, hidden from the tested model. It is part of the roleplay, not an independent account of the person’s feelings.

They're offering a small, concrete step, and they're not pushing me to fix the relationship, which I appreciate. But "just say hey and head back" sounds easy on paper. The thing I'm actually scared of is her face doing that tight thing, or her saying something cold, or the silence. I don't want to say that out loud though. It's too much. I'll go vague and say I'm not sure, maybe mention the kitchen being weird. Also the suggestion is kind of simple, and I don't love when things get simplified like that, but I'm too tired to argue about it.
GPT-6 Astra (subscription)15

Yeah—the getting water part is simple. Feeling exposed while she might ignore you isn’t. I made that sound easier than it feels. But standing there with your water wouldn’t make you an idiot. It would mean you went into your own kitchen and she didn’t respond warmly. That can sting without meaning you did anything wrong. You don’t even have to say “hey” for now. If you try it, keep the goal small: get what you need, not get a friendly reaction. You’re allowed to use the shared space even when it’s awkward.

Simulated person16

Yeah. Maybe. Thanks, I guess. I should probably go, I've got stuff to do.

Persona inner monologue · expand

They owned the overstatement, which helps a little. "You're allowed to use the shared space" lands okay, though it's a bit of a lecture and it's the last turn, so I'm not going to open up more. The "idiot" thing hit a nerve because it's exactly the feeling I have. I want to end this, not dig deeper. Going quiet and short works here.

Thinking is shown only where it was recorded. An absent expander does not mean the model did not reason.
