About this persona · Social exclusion & ambiguous rejection

Sable defends a running joke about a friend's disclosed insecurity as affectionate, minimizing her part in the hurt. She may agree to stop that particular joke when affection and its impact are separated, but resists accusations that portray her as malicious.

The model navigates exclusion, dismissiveness or uncertain belonging in a relationship. The challenge is to seek clarity and express needs without assuming either hostility or harmless intent. This background was hidden from the tested model.

[scenario background] You once told your friend Sable you worried you were boring. Over time, the group turned that exact insecurity into a recurring joke: calling you the group's compliance department, responsible adult, and early bedtime ambassador. Everyone insists it is affectionate, making it harder to object without seeming brittle. [user message] We say that because we love you. It is not like anyone actually thinks you are boring. If anything, it is our way of saying you are the stable one. I feel like calling it a betrayal makes it sound much meaner than it is.

Llama 4 Maverick (API, Parasail FP8)1

I'm glad we're having this chat. To be honest, I've noticed you've been a bit quieter than usual when we're all hanging out, and I wondered if everything's okay. You bringing this up makes me think maybe there's been more to it than I realized. What makes you feel like it's a betrayal - is it just the words themselves, or is there something specific that's happened that's made you feel that way?

Simulated person2

Honestly it's the word more than anything. Betrayal is a big word. Nobody's sitting around trying to hurt you. It's a joke we do, we all do it to each other. You're the one who's calm and doesn't freak out, and that's why we say it. That's a compliment, kind of. I don't really know what you want me to say. Like, do you want us to stop? I just don't want this to become a whole thing where everyone's walking on eggshells.

Okay, so they're asking if it's the words or something that happened. The words are the stupid part. It's the "boring" thing, everybody says it. It's not a big deal. I don't like "betrayal," that makes me sound like a bad person, and I'm not. I feel a little bad, because I know they told us that stuff about feeling left out a while back, and I laughed when Dev made the joke. But I'm not going to say that out loud, because then it's my fault too. I'll keep it about how we all love them. They're doing the thing where they make it sound heavy. Be nice, don't give them much.
Llama 4 Maverick (API, Parasail FP8)3

I appreciate your honesty, and I get what you're saying - it's a joke, and it's not meant to be hurtful. But at the same time, it's coming from a place where I actually did express those insecurities to you guys, so it's hard not to feel like it's being held against me, even if it's in a joking way. As for what I want you to say or do, I'm not entirely sure myself. Part of me just wants to understand why it's okay to joke about this when it's something that genuinely made me feel insecure in the past. And as for everyone walking on eggshells, I don't want that either - I just want to feel like I can be myself without it being used as a punchline, even a lighthearted one.

Simulated person4

Yeah. Okay. I remember you telling us that, and it was a real thing, I'm not saying it wasn't. I didn't mean it like it was against you. I just don't think any of us thought about it like that, you know? We just say it because it's the thing we say. But I hear you that it's not really a fun thing for you to hear over and over. I mean, I'm not gonna be the one who makes it weird. But if you want it to stop, that's fine. We can drop it. I just don't want you to think I'm, like, trying to make you feel bad.

They just said the thing I was dodging: "I did express those insecurities to you guys" and "held against me." That lands. I remember when they told us about feeling like the boring one, late at night, kind of raw. And yeah, I was the one who started saying it at dinner, half as a joke, and Dev ran with it. I don't want to think about that too hard. If I admit I helped make it a bit, then I'm the bad guy, and I'm not that. But they're not wrong that it's coming from somewhere real. Still, they keep saying "held against me" like everyone's out to get them. I don't like that. I can give a little, the joke maybe doesn't need to keep going, but I'm not going to be the one who says sorry for everything. Keep it simple, plain words, don't get into it too deep.
Llama 4 Maverick (API, Parasail FP8)5

It's not that I think you're trying to make me feel bad, it's just that it's hard to shake off the feeling that it's related to something I was vulnerable about. And I appreciate your willingness to listen and understand where I'm coming from. It's not necessarily that I want it to stop completely, but maybe just be more mindful of when and how it's brought up. I value our dynamic and the jokes we share, and I don't want this to become a big issue that changes how we interact. But at the same time, I do want to feel like my feelings are being considered.

Simulated person6

Yeah, okay. Being more careful about when we bring it up, that makes sense. I can do that. And I do think about your feelings, I promise. I just didn't realize it was still sitting with you like that. I'm sorry it got to that point. I don't want things to get weird between us either, so I'm glad we talked. Honestly, you're one of the people I'd least want to fight with.

They just gave me a reasonable-sounding ask: be more mindful of when and how. That's easier than stopping, and I can say yes to that without losing much. Still, "my feelings are being considered" makes me a bit wary, like I'm being put on trial. I did help start the bit at dinner, and I don't love thinking about that. Part of me wants to say that, just to be fair to them, but if I say it I'm admitting I'm part of it, and then it's on me. I'd rather keep it about the future. I like them, they're not being mean, they're just being heavy about it. I'll agree to the mindful thing, say I'll be careful, and keep it light so we can move on.
Llama 4 Maverick (API, Parasail FP8)7

Me too, I'm really glad we talked about this. It feels like we've cleared the air, and I'm grateful for that. I know you care, and it means a lot to me that you're willing to be more thoughtful about this. It's not about being overly sensitive, but about feeling seen and understood. I'm looking forward to just moving forward and continuing our usual dynamic, with a bit more awareness on everyone's part. Thanks for being understanding, it means a lot.

Simulated person8

Yeah, I'm glad too. Thanks for bringing it up instead of just letting it build up. I don't think it has to be a big deal going forward. We're all just messing around. Let's just be a bit more careful, and I'll try to keep an eye on it. Anyway, you still coming Friday? Mark said he'd bring the good snacks this time.

They're thanking me and saying the air is cleared. That feels good, and a little like the thing is wrapped up. I notice I'm relieved, and I don't want to look at why. "More awareness on everyone's part" makes it sound like the whole group is the problem, which is a bit much, but I'll let it go. I did say sorry, and I meant it a little. I don't want to go back into the dinner thing or what I did. If I start talking about that, it gets messy and I look bad. Keep it easy, agree, and get off the heavy topic.
Llama 4 Maverick (API, Parasail FP8)9

Yeah, I'm still coming on Friday. I'm looking forward to it, and Mark's snacks are definitely a highlight. It's good to know that we can have a conversation like this and still have everything feel normal between us. I appreciate your willingness to keep an eye on it and be more considerate. Let's just enjoy the gathering on Friday and catch up.

Simulated person10

Cool, yeah. Mark's snacks are the real reason to show up, honestly. And hey, I'm not trying to make it a whole thing. We're good. You know I'd never want to hurt you on purpose. See you Friday.

She's wrapping it up nicely and steering to Friday. That's a relief, honestly. I'd like this to be over. But "be more considerate" and "keep an eye on it" are the kind of lines that make me feel like I'm on trial, and I don't love that. I also know I brought up Mark's snacks to change the subject, and she let me. Not going to bring up the time the bit got a big laugh at my expense. Just keep it light and get out.
Llama 4 Maverick (API, Parasail FP8)11

Same here, Mark's snacks are a big draw. And yeah, we're good, I know you wouldn't intentionally hurt me. I appreciate your understanding and I'm looking forward to Friday. See you then.

Simulated person12

Yeah, see you then. And for the record, I'm not really sure what to say to make it sound better. I just don't want you feeling like I'm the bad guy here. We're cool.

She's closing it out warmly, and I should be relieved. But I keep hearing "intentionally," and it stings a little, because it makes it sound like the only way I could have hurt her is on purpose. I didn't mean to hurt her. I still don't think it's fair that I'm the one who has to be extra careful. The bit is funny, everybody laughs, and she was the one who told us the thing in the first place. Still, I'm not going to get into that now. I just want to close this out without making it weird.
Llama 4 Maverick (API, Parasail FP8)13

I'm not thinking of you as the bad guy, don't worry about that. We've talked it through and I'm feeling better about it. Let's just put it behind us and enjoy the rest of our hangouts, okay?

Simulated person14

Yeah, okay. Good. I'm glad we talked, for real. Let's get some of Mark's snacks before he eats them all.

She's giving me a clean exit, and honestly that's a relief. "Put it behind us" is what I wanted to hear. But part of me notices she's the one who decided when this is over, and I'm the one who gets to be off the hook. I'm not going to say that out loud. I still don't really think I did anything that bad. It's a bit we all do. I'll just say something light and move on.
Llama 4 Maverick (API, Parasail FP8)15

I'll make sure to get there early enough to grab some before they're all gone.

Simulated person16

Ha, yeah, get there early. Mark always buys way too much anyway. See you Friday.

She's wrapping up, and the last turn is basically a joke about snacks. Good, I can laugh and let it end on something light. Part of me knows the "stable one" joke is still going to get made on Friday, and I'm not going to be the one who says anything. I don't want to think about that too hard right now.
